We were on our way to the mall when I asked Matt about a comment he’d made to his father the night before. “Sir, when your dad offered you the job, why’d you tell him you needed to talk it over with me and then get back to him?”

“Wanted him to see that the big decisions in my life affected both of us—me and my pup. “

I laughed. “So you’re saying I have to give you permission?”

Matt was driving, but momentarily looked over at me, throwing me a stern glare. “That’s not what I’m sayin at all. I never said I needed to get your permission. Said I needed to talk it over with you.”

“But Sir, you’ve never talked over any other decisions with me. I’ve never expected it. I trust you …”

“You better trust me,” he said. “What I really wanted to talk over with you isn’t the job. I’ll decide that on my own. I wanted to see how you felt about my parents. I don’t wanna step back into their lives again if they make you uncomfortable—if they don’t treat you right.”

“You already know how much I love your mom, Sir.”

“What about my dad?” he said.

“Your dad is like you, Sir.” I smiled as he grimaced.

“You want your ass paddled?” he said seriously.

“Sir! He is like you! He’s like a carbon copy of you, only older.”

“My dad is not like me … or I’m not like him. We’re totally different from each other. My dad’s a real prick sometimes. He was bein nice last night—on his best behavior.”

“No offense, Sir … but you can be mean sometimes too.”

“Shut it, pup,” he said. I sensed he now was starting to get pissed. “You don’t know what you’re talkin bout. My dad can be a jerk, and I really don’t wanna be anything like that. He’s done shit you don’t even know about.”

“I’m sorry, Sir. I just mean you look a lot alike. You sound alike and have the same mannerisms and everything. And I think he really wants to have a close relationship with you. That’s all.”

“He needs me for his business. He can’t keep managers cause he’s such an asshole to them, and he knows I’m a good one. Plus my mom was pressuring him. Believe me, she can be very persuasive.”

“Will you please do me a favor, Sir? Please just give him a chance. Wait and see if he is really trying to be different now.”

“I plan on it, and I don’t need some faggot sub tellin me how to manage my relationship with my parents. I thought I told you to shut it!”

His sharp words cut me to the quick. I couldn’t believe he’d be so dismissive of me.

“You are like him!” I snapped back. “You’re every bit the jerk that you say he is!” I then turned from him and stared out the passenger window, feeling hot tears stream down my cheeks. We rode in silence until we reached the mall parking lot.
